From Joseph to Moses
-On Hold in Egypt-
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, "Because God has shown you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are: You shall be over my house, and according unto your word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than you." And Pharaoh...gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On.
And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities
. And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came. Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. And the name of the second called he Ephraim.
Then the seven years of abundance that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, "Go unto Joseph; what he says to you, do." And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph
to buy corn; because that the famine was so bad in all lands.
And Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy corn in Egypt. And Joseph said unto his brothers, "Come near to me, I pray you." And they came near. And he said, "I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves that you sold me here: for God did send me before you to preserve life. Hurry, and go up to my father, and say unto him, this says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt: come down unto me, delay not."
And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father, and told him, saying, "Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt." And Jacob's heart fainted, for he believed them not.
And God spoke unto Jacob in the visions of the night, and said, "Jacob, Jacob."
And Jacob said, "Here am I."
And God said, "I am God, the God of your father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of you great nation: I will go down with you into Egypt; and I will also surely bring you up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes."
And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons, which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him
.
And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Jacob his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept
a good while.
And Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions in the land, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly. And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was a hundred forty-seven years.
And Jacob said unto Joseph, "Look, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. And now your two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto you in the land of Egypt before I came unto you
are mine; as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine." (By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.)
And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days...the scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be
." And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and died and was gathered unto his people.
Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. And Joseph died, (By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. He took an oath from them saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.") And all Josephs brothers died, and all that generation. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from which they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city.
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and became exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Therefore the Egyptians did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, in which they made them serve, was with rigor. And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, "Every Israelite son that is born you shall throw into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive."
And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bore a son, and she hid him three months. (By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was no ordinary child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.) And when his mother could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child in it; and she laid it in the reeds by the river's edge.
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the baby wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, "This is one of the Hebrews' children." And Pharaoh's daughter said unto the childs mother, "Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages." And the woman took the child, and nursed it. And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: she said, "Because I drew him out of the water."
And it came to pass
by faith Moses, when he was come of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the payment of the reward.
In those days, when Moses was grown, he went out unto his people, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, (By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the anger of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.) and lived in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them
.
When they came to Jethro their father, he said, "How is it that you are come so soon to day?"
And the girls said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock."
And Jethro said unto his daughters, "Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread." And Moses was content to live with the man: and Jethro gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God
. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the middle of a bush: and Moses looked, and, behold the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
And Moses said, "I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt."
And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the middle of the bush, and said, "Moses, Moses."
And Moses said, "Here am I."
And he said, "Draw not near here: put off your shoes from off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground."
Furthermore God said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."
And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God. And the LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.
I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites."
"Come now therefore, and I will send you unto Pharaoh, that you may bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt."
And Moses said unto God, "Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?"
And God said, "Certainly I will be with you; and this shall be a token unto you, that I have sent you: When you have brought forth the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain."
And Moses said unto God, "Look, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, the God of your fathers has sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them?"
