The "I Am" on Trial
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden
that was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, "Sit
here, while I shall pray."
And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and deeply anguished. Then said Jesus unto them, "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: wait
here, and watch with me. And pray that you enter not into temptation."
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done." And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
And when Jesus rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, "Why sleep you? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation."
And he...said unto Peter, "Simon, sleep you? Could not you watch one hour? Watch
and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak."
And again Jesus went away, and prayed, and spoke the same words. "Saying, Father, if you be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done." And when Jesus returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither knew they what to answer him. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words, "Father, Father, all things are possible unto you; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what you will."
Then came Jesus to his disciples, and said unto them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest: look, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going: look, he is at hand that does betray me."
And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus often times resorted there with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. And immediately, while Jesus yet spoke, came Judas,
Now Judas that betrayed Jesus gave the band a sign, saying, "Whomever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast." Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went out, and said unto the band of men, "Whom seek you?"
They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus said unto them, "I AM
." (And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.) As soon then as Jesus had said unto them, "I AM
," they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Then asked Jesus them again, "Whom seek you?"
And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus answered, "I have told you that I AM
. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way": That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spoke, of them which you gave me have I lost none.
While Jesus yet spoke... he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before the band, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said unto him, "Judas, betray you the Son of man with a kiss?"
And immediately Judas came to Jesus, and said, "Hail, Master;" and kissed him.
And Jesus said unto him, "Friend, from where are you come?" Then came the band of men, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. Therefore Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
Then said Jesus unto Peter, "Put up again your sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Think you that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? ...The cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?" And Jesus touched Malchus ear, and healed him.
Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, "Be you come out, as against a thief, with swords and clubs? I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. This is your hour, and the power of darkness."
Then all the disciples left him, and fled. And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth thrown about his naked body; and the young men from the band laid hold on the young man: And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.
Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, and they led Jesus away to the high priest
to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. (Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.)
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then went out that other disciple
and spoke unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and struck him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, "Prophesy, who is it that struck you?" And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him.
The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered
, "I spoke openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why ask you me? Ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: look, they know what I said."
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers, who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Answer you the high priest so?"
Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why strike you me?"
Now Annas had sent Jesus bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, searched for false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; but found none
. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.
At the last came two false witnesses, and said, "This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. " But neither so did their witness agree together. And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, "Answer you nothing? What is it which these witness against you?" But Jesus held his peace.
And the high priest answered and said unto him, "I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you be the Christ, the Son of God."
And Jesus said, "I AM: and you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his clothes, and said, "What need we any further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy: what think you?" And they all condemned Jesus to be guilty of death. And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with their fists, and to say unto him, "Prophesy": and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led Jesus into their council, saying, "Are you the Christ? Tell us."
And Jesus said unto them, "If I tell you, you will not believe: And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. From here on shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God."
Then said they all, "Are you then the Son of God?"
And Jesus said unto them, "
I AM."
And they said, "What need we any further witness? For we ourselves have heard of his own mouth."
And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. But a certain maid saw him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, "This man was also with Jesus."
And Peter denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I know him not."
And when Peter was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, "This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth." And again Peter denied with an oath, "I do not know the man."
And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, "Surely you also are one of them; for your speech betrays you."
Then began Peter to curse and to swear, saying, "I know not the man." And immediately the cock crowed. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, "Before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times." And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood."
And they said, "What is that to us? See you to that." And Judas threw down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hung himself.
And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said; "It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood." And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field was called, "The field of blood," unto this day. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me."
And when they had bound Jesus, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. And it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the Passover.
