The word spirit used in Ecclesiastes 12:7 is an older english translation of the hebrew word breath or life. When we die our breath, which sustains our life, returns to God who gave it to us.
The word ruwach appears many times in the Bible. It is translated differently in various texts appearing as; Spirit or spirit 232 times, wind 92 times, breath 27 times, side 6 times, mind 5 times, blast 4 times, vain 2 times, air 1 time, anger 1 time, cool 1 time, courage 1 time, and in miscellaneous forms 6 times; for a total of 378 appearances.
