Argue with the Eternal

"And Moses answered and said, But, look, they will not believe me, nor listen unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD has not appeared unto you." Exodus 4:1

In these words of Moses, "But, look," is packed one of the great wonders of prayer, its raw openness. Prayer is talking to God about anything. Talking with Him as you would with a friend. In prayer there are no barriers, no things you cannot say, no feelings you cannot express. Everything that concerns our peace concerns God, too.

Here Moses sees fit to argue with the Eternal. And God argues back. It is at once a refreshing and astounding revelation. We can discuss with God. In fact, later on in scripture God requests our discussion. He says, " Come now, and let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." Isaiah 1:18.

This freedom of expression Moses has with God is a powerful insight into the depth and strength of the relationship they ultimately shared. Openness with God, communication with Him in heart bearing intimacy is paramount to personal relationship. Job, Abraham, Moses, writers of the Psalms and David all are examples of this truth. In each case these individuals in God's "Hall of Faith" hold one thing in common. Heart bearing, unedited, communication with God. And in each case God came near and returned in kind.

Today remember His understanding and bear your soul to Him. This is the essence of prayer.
