Benjamin

Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob, and the second child of Rachel. She died at his birth. When Jacob lost Joseph he became very attached to Benjamin. When Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to get food during the famine he was reluctant to sent Benjamin with them. It is also apparent that Joseph loved Benjamin, his only full brother. He sent the brothers back to Canaan with food, but kept Simeon as a hostage and told them not to come again unless their brother Benjamin was with them. Later Jacob reluctantly let Benjamin go to Egypt with his brothers. Joseph gave them a dinner, and startled the brothers by seating them correctly according to age. He also gave Benjamin five times more than his brothers. When the brothers left to go home, Joseph commanded his steward to fill their bags with food but put his silver cup in Benjamin's sack. Joseph sent his men after them and then arrested Benjamin when the cup was found in his sack. Judah insisted the loss of Benjamin would kill their father and offered to remain behind instead. Soon after Joseph revealed that he was their brother. There was a tearful reunion and Joseph hugged Benjamin a long time. He then invited the entire family of Jacob to come and live in Egypt to escape the famine.

Read about Benjamin in Genesis 35:18, 24; Genesis 42 through 46; 49:27; Exodus 1:3; Deuteronomy 33:12; 1 Chronicles 2:2; and 7:6.
