Dan

Dan was the fifth son of Jacob and the oldest son of Bilhah, Rachel's maid. He with all his other brothers, except Benjamin, was involved in the events that lead to Joseph's slavery in Egypt. Dan and his sons went with Jacob to settle in Egypt during the famine. On his deathbed Jacob said, "Dan shall judge his people." During the conquest of Canaan by Joshua the small tribe of Dan was given an area in the foothills southwest of Ephraim. A city of Dan was established further north than any other Israelite city.

Dan is mentioned in Genesis 30:6; 35:25; 46:23; 49:16-17; Exodus 1:4; Numbers 26:42; Deuteronomy 33:22; Joshua 19:47; and 1 Chronicles 2:2.
