Jethro

Jethro was a priest and leader of the Midianite tribe known as the Kenites who lived in the Sinai desert. He is also called Reuel and Raguel. When Moses fled from Egypt after killing an Egyptian taskmaster he lived with Jethro and tended his sheep for forty years. Moses married one of Jethro's daughters named Zipporah. After Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt Jethro came to visit him near Mount Sinai and said, "Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods." Moses and Jethro's relationship must have been close because Moses readily took Jethro's advice to appoint judges to whom he could teach the laws and then delegate some of his work and leave only the most difficult cases for himself.

Lessons from the life of Jethro:

  • Don't let your religious background keep you from responding in faith to a new revelation of God.
  • As we give God away to others by sharing our experience of Him with them, He gives Himself even more to us.
  • Leaders need to delegate their work for God among others so they don't wear themselves out.
  • God's plan includes all nations.

Read about Jethro in Exodus 3:1; 4:18; 18:1-12; Numbers 10:29; Judges 1:16; and 4:11.
