Lot

Lot was Abraham's nephew. He accompanied Abraham and Sarah when they left Mesopotamia. He and his uncle had large herds and eventually had to separate so they would have enough pastureland. He chose the more fertile land of the Jordan River Valley toward Sodom and gave Abraham the rocky hill country. He eventually took his family into Sodom and was there when God decided to destroy the city because of its wickedness. Angels were sent to warn Lot and his family. Unfortunately as they were fleeing Lot's wife disobeyed and looked back and became a pillar of salt. Following the escape Lot lived in a cave. His daughters got him drunk and enticed him into incest. Two sons were born who became the ancestors of the Moabites and the Ammonites.

Lessons from the life of Lot:

  • Don't seek the riches and ease of this world in place of obedience to God.
  • God wants us to be an influence for Him, not just drift through life.
  • The society we associate with will affect the future outcome of our lives.

Lot's story is told in Genesis 11-14, 19; He is also mentioned in Deuteronomy 2:9; Luke 17:28-32; and 2 Peter 2:7-8.
