Moses
Moses was born in Egypt during the 400 years the Israelites were slaves there. His father and mother were Amram and Jochebed. His sister was Miriam and his brother was Aaron. He was a prophet of God used to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. In the Old Testament his life is divided into three parts. He lived in Egypt for forty years. He was raised by the Pharaoh's daughter and educated in the royal courts. The next forty years were spent in the land of Midian tending sheep. He married Zipporah the daughter of a Midianite priest. The last forty years he spent in the wilderness leading the Israelites as God tried to prepare them to take possession of Canaan. He died at the border to the Promised Land. He was held in high esteem throughout Israelite history. Both the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament disciples viewed his teachings as authoritative. He is credited with writing the first five books of the Bible. Moses has the most significantly and extensively recorded relationship with God of any single Bible individual.
Lessons from the life of Moses:
- God prepares the people He uses.
- God does His greatest work through weak people.
- Choosing oppression with the people of God instead of the temporary
- pleasures of sin will have eternal results.
- God will not ignore disobedience even in His great leaders.
- God's leaders need to recognize and use the talents of others.
- God seeks communication and relationships with people.
Moses' story can be found in the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy. He is
also mentioned in Acts 7:20-44 and Hebrews 11:23-29.
